Wastewater Gardens International was formed to offer affordable and effective solutions to the current dire global situation:
in poorer countries lacking effective sewage treatment, wastewater contaminates drinking water supplies resulting in high levels of disease and death.
in wealthier countries, sewage treatment plants are extremely expensive to construct and operate while generating significant amounts of greenhouse gases.
In addition, sewage contamination is a leading cause of environmental degradation, since excessive nutrients from wastewater cause eutrophication which kills freshwater and marine organisms, from fish to coral reefs.
By promoting the adoption of Wastewater Gardens, we aim to reverse the current status quo by recycling valuable organic nutrients and reducing demands on increasingly scarce water resources.
Wastewater Gardens are a carbon and nutrient sink, helping mitigate greenhouse production and climate change.
We seek to empower people through our research and training workshops, so that the further spread of Wastewater Gardens can be done by local people in the countries where we work. Since they require little or no imported equipment or machinery, and far less energy to build and operate, Wastewater Gardens save considerable money and resources while turning a wasted natural resource into beautiful, sustainable, and productive green areas.
Wastewater Gardens turn human waste into flowers, fruits and other usable products while protecting human health and local ecosystems.
